The Dead Weather - Horehound

“Oooh! It’s Jack White’s new band. Exciting!”

Well, kinda. I mean, he’s not the singer or anything.

“Oh, well I love him on guitar. He has such an amaaaazing sound.”

Well, hold on. He’s not exactly playing guitar either. I mean, he plays guitar on a couple tracks…I think.

“Well what the fuck? This doesn’t really sound like its Jack White’s band at all.”

You’re right. I mean, for the most part.

“For the most part? What the fuck does that mean?”

Well, he plays the drums, and sings on a couple tracks, and plays the guitar a little as well. But you’re really gonna notice singer Alison Mosshart of The Kills. She really gives The Dead Weather this bluesy southern rock version of Joan Jett.

“That sounds kinda cool”

It is, and she owns the fuck out of it.

“So why does everyone hype this as Jack White’s new band?”

Star power. It worked on you didn’t it? Plus, its not like hes just hiding behind a curtain in weird, effeminate sunglasses smoking cigarettes, nervously eyeing the audience like an overly stimulated future “To Catch a Predator” victim.

“Ok, ok. Jack White’s in the band, I’m interested. So am I going to hear them on the radio or on MTV at 2am or whatever?”

Probably not. I mean, the album doesn’t have that mainstream crossover feel, or that one catchy single. It’s a contemporary southern rock album, with deep grooves, and overall, just a little darker than some of those other Jack White bands.

“Umm, I’m not exactly sure I’m sold.”

Yeah, me either. They totally ripped live, but somehow it didn’t totally translate onto the record.

“Well shit.”
