SXSW 2013 Spotlight: Palma Violets SXSW 2013 Spotlight: Palma Violets

palmaI am super leery of buzz bands. Doubly so of any buzz band blessed by the NME and sent to our post-colonial shores to take back the youth rebellion we built on the scars of ten thousand shameful trades. I’ve just been burned too many times. Burned BAD! Remember Bloc Party? I got wind from a friend living in Paris at the time that that band would change my life and then the press got to rumbling, the junket caught fire and I went to see one of their four sold out shows at Webster Hall and it was one of the most painfully mundane experiences of my (then) young adult life. I still kinda wished I had died that die because my faith and rock and roll had been so egregiously shaken.

But this is different. This is Palma Violets. A rag tag group of misspent youths who play something seemingly true to the spirit of maximum rhythm and blues. On record it’s pretty decent but every single goddamn account of their recent six gig whirlwind through NYC attests to the fact that once these pale-faced Brits get up on stage they become electric fucking maniacs playing jungle rules in a chess match with death.

I’m not exactly sure what that really means but I’ll be damned if it isn’t exciting.
