Rebelution - Bright Side Of Life

Rebelution has some big britches to fill.  Following their explosive debut album Courage To Grow the Santa Barbara boys have faced a challenge that many a talented young band has – how to follow a successful break out.

Bright Side Of Life is Rebelution’s second full length album and is highly anticipated in the reggae world.  Having topped iTunes reggae charts, bombarding the radio in California and Hawaii, and selling out shows from San Diego to Guam, Rebelution’s momentum is undeniable.  But the second go is always a tricky one.  How do you capitalize on what your first album has cultivated while progressing musically and avoiding the pitfalls of formulaity.  The production of Bright Side Of Life was a pivotal moment in Rebelution’s career.  With the outstanding performance of their first album they have attracted significant attention from major labels and have felt the pressures of the ‘mainstream’.  In true Rebelution fashion, the band turned down offers from major labels and instead created their own label – 87 Music.  Named after the address of a house on infamous Del Playa street in Isla Vista where they played their first show and where each band member lived at some point in the crazy Santa Barbara days.  Rebelution’s decision to produce Bright Side under their own label speaks volumes about their characters, their values and commitment to their roots.  Rory describes the situation – “It was basically us saying ‘this is us, we want to do it how we want to do it, not how someone else wants it.’”  The decision was a surprise to many, but only to those who don’t know Rebelution, because if you know the band you know that it fits perfectly with their mantra of ‘keeping it real’.  This, of course, means giving props to the people that helped them come up “We’ve been fortunate to have guidance from Controlled Substance, Stoopid Records, Raise Up Music and Silverback Music.  So we’re very grateful for them because we wouldn’t be where we are and wouldn’t be starting our label without them”.  Bright Side Of Life is a perfect example of a band that has managed to progress while staying connected to their beginnings.

The intense 2 year touring frenzy that resulted from the success of Courage To Grow has quite appropriately given the band an opportunity to grow immensely as musicians, as performers and as people and it shows in Bright Side Of Life.  The album stays true to their theme of encouragement and positivity and features everything that fans will expect while adding entirely new elements that prove their diversity as musicians. “The great thing about reggae is that it’s so simple, so it’s easy to blend with other genres.” said Eric as Rory added “We all listen to so many different types of music and we’re able to take all of our influences and create a unique sound.”

As far as individual tracks, it will be difficult to top the reception of songs like ‘Attention Span’ and ‘Safe And Sound’, but there are a few signature cuts on Bright Side such as their title track ‘Bright Side Of Life’ and the promising single ‘Outta Control’.  My personal favorite is the seamless combo of ‘Dubzilla’ and ‘Bump’, which is sure to jam out at shows creating a cult demand similar to ‘Green To Black’.  As a treat to all of their original fans, Bright Side includes a new version of ‘Change Up The System’, which was a favorite on their self-titled EP but, to the disappointment of many, didn’t make it onto Courage To Grow.

The Point: Everything about Bright Side Of Life supports what fans love about Rebelution.  It can be summed up in one word – ‘organic’.  Everything from the music to the album art to the creation of 87 Music reminds fans that strong trees grow from deep roots.
