Outside Lands 2013 Spotlight : The Growlers Outside Lands 2013 Spotlight : The Growlers

The-GrowlersOrange County’s self-described “Beach Goths,” The Growlers and their menagerie of drunken fans will be stumbling to the Sutro Stage at 3:25 on Saturday. The Growlers are well-known for their illicit recreational activities and onstage theatricality. If nothing else, their set should be a hell of a party, even with the afternoon start time.

After four albums over the last six years, The Growlers brand of countrified psychedelic surf rock appears to be gaining momentum. The band’s latest album, Hung at Heart, is being touted as its breakthrough. The album is all Growlers through and through. So much so that the band sent Dan Auerbach packing and decided to produce Hung on their own.

The Growlers are playing Outside Lands on the eve of hitting the road for a string of dates for Burger Records, and fresh off of opening for The Flaming Lips. They will return home to Orange County in October as the inspiration and headliners for the second annual Beach Goth Party. There won’t be any beach, and there probably won’t be a ton of Goths either, but don’t let that stop you from heading to see The Growlers and have a beach Goth party of your own.
