Outside Lands 2013 Spotlight: Kurt Vile and The Violators Outside Lands 2013 Spotlight: Kurt Vile and The Violators

kurt-vile-echo-4-21_bi0042[1] Kurt Vile is a site favorite here at Pinpoint Music. We named “Smoke Ring for My Halo” our number two album of 2011, and of all been loving his newest LP “Wakin on a Pretty Daze”.

Kurt Vile’s live show can be pretty different depending on whether he’s playing alone, which usually means a stripped down acoustic folk set, or whether he’s backed by his band The Violators (Mike Zanghi on drums, Adam Granduciel on guitar, mellotron and percussion, and Jesse Trbovich on guitar). When Kurt’s got his band with him, like he will at Outside Lands, it’s normally psych jams for days. Lest we forget Vile is first and foremost a fuzzed out rocker hiding behind a mop of hair that would’ve made 80s Metallica drop their Night Train.

KV and The Violators seem to be genuine antiheroes, but not the type who are overly brash caricatures trying to be anti-establishment to sell records. Vile legitimately doesn’t seem to subscribe to the idea of rock stars as megalomaniacs. For all his international touring and throngs of fans, his music hasn’t deviated from the earnest and identifiable tunes that he came up on. That’s not to say that over the years the sound hasn’t changed, it has. Kurt used to hide behind distortion a lot more in years past, but his music over the past couple albums has really highlighted KV’s elite songwriting and singing abilities. The result sound is more cerebral and involving. You just get the feeling that Kurt Vile is deep in the groove right now and we’ve got prime time seats.

Kurt vile is scheduled to play the Sutro stage during Outside Lands 2013 on Sunday, August 11 at 2:30 PM.
