Outside Lands 2013 Spotlight: D’Angelo Outside Lands 2013 Spotlight: D’Angelo

DAngelo-Europe_2012[1]Watching D’Angelo’s re-emergence in the US this spring at the Brooklyn Bowl with Questlove of The Roots was equal parts novelty act and neo-soul revival-revival audiogasm that couldn’t have been a more fitting foreshadowing of summer music festival wet-dreaminess.

D’Angelo’s road to Outside Lands 2013, from his early days with the Soulquarians and music videos featuring pelvic muscles, has been a choppy disappearing act, to put it simply.

After releasing Brown Sugar in 1995, D’Angelo waited five years to release the critically acclaimed Voodoo, along with that unforgettable video to the song, Untitled (How Does It Feel?); which I would be completely negligent to mention without bringing up the unsettled claim that he was being fellated during the filming of the video. As far as rumors go, the “received head on film” one is decidedly not the worst – only adding to the sexy mystique of D’Angelo.

Then he disappeared.

We saw a few fat-photos and a semi-shocking mug shot when the internet became Skynet, but D’Angelo remained under the radar for over 10 years.

That is until this spring, when D’Angelo unveiled his re-imagined, live, soul-funk, James Brown impression to the world, with world class musicianship and that signature sex-scream – minus the thousands of abs this time.

(Update 8-6-13: At the time of this post it was revealed that D’Angelo has been hospitalized and has had to cancel the shows preceding Outside Lands 2013. His status for Outside Lands is still confirmed until further notice.)
