“Fads swept the youth of the Sprawl at the speed of light; entire subcultures could rise overnight, thrive for a dozen weeks, and then vanish utterly.”

-William Gibson, Neuromancer. (1984)

By now, I have talked at length about the contested electronic genres Witchhouse and Chillwave. To summarize, both genres were invented by a select few to apply to a small handful of electronic artists with similar thematic style and musical template. Witchhouse (or “Drag,” or “Grave Wave”) stands as the more rooted of the two as an industrial electronic music splinter cell with shared interests in the goth scene as well as the Houston based chopped and screwed style. Regardless of birth, Witchhouse (and Chillwave) have evolved so far that arguing the legitimacy of their existence is a moot point. There now exists a dizzying array of artists all traveling to the same dark point.

Witchhouse is easy to identify as its naming structure usually involves symbols and is unpronounceable. Some of the more hilarious artists in the genre are:▼□■□■□■, ~▲†▲~, §▲N┼Ω§, ^, ➫ ➬ ➩ ➪ ➭ ➮ ➯ ➱ , ❖, and, of course, everyone’s favorite — ░▒▓. While probably intended to add mystery and unconventionality to the style, the naming structure is interpreted as a ludicrous need for hype and attention.

Within any style exists the bad and good. Witchhouse’s bad is usually given more attention than quality releases which add to the genres strength. M△S▴C△RA is one in a thousand Witchhouse artists who follow every rule in the Witchhouse book. Despite being one in a thousand, the Silver Knight Gothic EP is nothing short of an interesting exploration in electronic music — sans subgenres.

What we have here, with the Silver Knight Gothic EP, is one amazing track flanked by four decent yet genetically inferior tracks. “The Shadow Of Tonight” comes in the middle of the 5 song EP and is by far one of the better Witchhouse tracks ever released. The reason for this praise is based around the song’s balance between hip hop beats, industrial noise and haunting background vocals. “The Shadow Of Tonight” is playful and cynical in a genre more concerned with pretentious posturing than crafting decent songs. M△S▴C△RA artfully breaks into the same landscape inhabited by Richard D James, Autechre and Boards Of Canada to create a truly ghoulish, and memorable, dance number. Now that we have talked about one song, let us move on to the rest of the record.

The remaining four tracks are not bad as they are less immediate than “Shadow Of Tonight. “Drone Priest” and “Ghosts/Blanket” travel into dark voids merely adding to M△S▴C△RA’s shadowy religious persona. “16th Street Baptist” and “Drunken Drug Deals” do more of the same but with a higher level of success for the listener. The album art for the Silver Knight Gothic EP shares common ground with the whole of Witchhouse as it screams both gothic undertones as well as hip aesthetics. Though less interesting than the records premiere track, the whole of the EP soars above other Witchhouse artists as M△S▴C△RA seems to be more interested in making music rather than playing dress-up.

The explosion of Witchhouse and Chillwave is not the result of the current digital culture as it is a part of it. It is my belief that micro-cultures have always existed (to a certain extent), yet our current digital resources allow these cultures to thrive and grow at a more rapid rate. Chillwave and Witchhouse are merely the beginning of one-off musical genres which will inhabit the future musical arena. I doubt William Gibson had in mind a specific subculture which could rise overnight. The line was most likely intended to showcase a cynical vision of a culture burned out on bits of information. Regardless, M△S▴C△RA would be a perfect fit for the dark and sinister streets of a dystopian future. I can almost see the dead television channel sky.
