Governors Ball 2013 – SKYY Vodka Tent Preview Governors Ball 2013 – SKYY Vodka Tent Preview

govballmainvodkaAh, tents. You know, in all my years of living and loving in this time of high rise heretics, I’m pretty sure I have only slept a night in one at a friend’s wedding somewhere in upstate after having partaken far too liberally of the beer truck and the fire and the impromptu MDC set (men in suits singing “John Wayne Was a Nazi” is a sight best experience blearily by the woods) and a hill and gallon contest which I can’t really call and someone said I was Shane McGowan but I wasn’t (duh) but anyway, I think I’m a fan of them at festivals because it grants one the opportunity to play intimate with bands that sound better in the shade anyway. I mean, I love New York in June and all but twelve hour in the sun turns my crow’s feet to talons and makes all company just a little too loathsome. No one sweats quite like I do. But, yeah, here are the bands playing for vodka. Set times remain approximate. Got that? Rockit.

Friday, June 7th!

12:45-1:30 – Bear Mountain – The more I listen to electronic music the more I wish I could shimmy without feeling like a cracker ass cracker. I mean, I’d totally just wave my hands in the air but I do care…too much.

2:15-3:00 – The Knocks – I mean, right? Party.

3:45-4:45 – Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs – Still party but with a silly costume and an even sillier name. Casey Spooner has much to answer for.

5:45-6:45 – Crystal Castles – I once saw Atari Teenage Riot and Hanin Elias did a stage dive that somehow ended with her crotch in my face, her legs wrapped around my neck and her screaming “INTO THE DEATH!” It was the fucking best.

8:00-9:30 – Erykah Badu & the Cannabinoids – I’m not going to like this, am I? Theremin.

Saturday, June 8th!

12:45-1:30 – Robert DeLong – This kid is so fucking talented he makes me want to cut my left foot off. Multi percussionist one man tweaks and singing which aligns barely perceptible mayhem in some brilliantly warped dance pop context.

2:15-3:00 – Icona Pop – Swedish lady DJs raising the maximum good time. “I Love It” is the party jam of forever.

3:45-4:45 – Fucked Up – YEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!! Punk rock operas are the reason.

5:45-6:45 – Azealia Banks – Azealia was hot shit for a minute, then she got all twit crazy and pissed the world off with rants justifying “faggot” and chiding Rhianna and Mr. Harlem Shake which, I guess, makes her an even more viable commodity now. Industry standards are hentai tentacles.

8:00-9:30 – Thievery Corporation – If the culture mashing DJs of America had one place to look for subliminal inspiration, it’d be in DC’s Thievery Corporation. These fuckers have been body rocking since 1995 and bump the funk out of your post modern DMT mind.

Sunday, June 9th!

12:45-1:30 – Cherub – Like it or now, you probably love it.

2:15-3:00 – Freddie Gibbs – Goddamn The Music Man. Gary, Indiana is hard as fuck.

3:45-4:45 – Twin Shadow – I have no idea what this sounds like.

5:45-6:45 – Yeasayer – Wasn’t this band hippies? Now they’re all goth funk electronic witchery? I don’t know, man. I’ve never liked them. They remind me of !!! who I’ve seen twice and always thought were total dicks except Touch & Go would never touch these which should mean a lot to some but will mean fuck all to the rest.

8:00-9:30 – Bloc Party – My friend, Olivier, told me that the show this band played in Paris was one of the best he’d ever seen. I saw them shortly thereafter when their US hype machine was at full bore. They were terrible. It’s been a long time since then, however, and I’m really hoping they remember (now) how to be amazing on stage.
