Felt 3 - A Tribute to Rosie Perez

The holiday season is a total boner shrinker. The obligations, expectations and shitty music are almost inescapable. The full-penetration advertising raw-dog’s your senses into spending money here, charging it there; and has somehow convinces us that we’re supposed to give a fuck about “Black Friday”. Fuck the holidays.

The only thing that isn’t a boner shrinker during the holidays – besides the normal non-boner shrinking stuff – is the occasional slutty Santa costume and random warm beverages that now contain alcohol.

But I had hope this holiday season; the third release from your favorite indie-rap group, that wasn’t even a group to start, Felt had a new album coming out – Felt 3: A Tribute to Rosie Perez. And just like when a random thong peaked its way out in ninth grade history, boner restored. Or so you’d think…

I mean, come on, Slug of Atmosphere fame, Murs of Living Legends and having crazy hair fame and producer/beat maestro Aesop Rock as the newest wrinkle in the Felt tribute collection; how could this miss? I’m baffled.

Hoping Slug and Murs could hold it all together Felt 3: A Tribute to Rosie Perez, went the break-beat route but just seemed to never fully commit, leaving the instrumentals feeling a little incomplete and just not very complementary to the vocals. Obviously just relying on the two MC’s to carry the whole project wasn’t the concept going in, but I gotta wonder if this somehow became apparent to the Felt crew during the process because despite the sound, what was lacking here was the overwhelming element of cool; hard to keep and often fleeting.

The lack of cool confidence that Slug and Murs had so casually put down on two previous Felt tribute albums was the demoralizer to Felt 3: A Tribute to Rosie Perez. It’s almost indescribable, but you know it when you hear it and feel it, and it just wasn’t there this time.  Fuck the holidays.
