All-Girl Kashmiri band Pragaash Disbands After Fatwa All-Girl Kashmiri band Pragaash Disbands After Fatwa

Pragaash_2472534b[1]An Indian based girl rock and roll group has re portly dissolved following a series of death threats and now a Fatwa from the Grand Mufti. A Fatwa is not a death threat though its presence carries much weight in Islamic law. It is used to create a non binding opinion that could be used later in rulings. Fatwa’s are issued to set precedence against something and this time it was against the indecency of an all girl rock group. The members of a high school group Pragaash received the ruling from Grand Mufti Bashiruddin Ahmad following their placing third in a local battle of the bands. Ahmad also said of the group “When girls and young women stray from the rightful path… this kind of non-serious activity can become the first step towards our destruction.” Despite not having an album, solid fanbase or probably a second chance to play, the members of Pragaash have found themselves unwillingly apart of a larger social war waged yet against between the factions of traditions and progress. Can we please go back to a time when that whole area was sort of progressive and produced amazing psych pop. I miss those days. I think other people will agree with me.
