We’ve been talking about Two Gallants a lot recently, and with good reason. This country/folk-tinged blues rock duo are really stirring things up right now. Based out of San Francisco Two Gallants are preparing to release their new album The Bloom and the Blight on September 4th via ATO Records. This will be the guy’s first album in 5 years. In their relatively  short career Two Gallants have gained a reputation for a relentless tour schedule, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that when their US/Canada tour officially kicks off on August 31st that they will play 30 of the following 40 days.

Two Gallants pictures- El Cid

This night at El Cid in LA was more of an intimate preview of what’s to come on the upcoming tour. Having just seen Two Gallants on the main stage at Outside Lands 2012 it was welcome contrast to see their club show performance. The show had been sold out like a week or so in advance, but it wasn’t very crowded, which actually created a pretty nice ambiance. Thanks to some more down-tempo numbers the music of Two Gallants came off much warmer than their big stage show which featured more of their bluesy rock tunes. Singer Adams Stephens’ voice bled with angst, and poured out of him in a way that makes you wonder how he has anything left for the next night, and the 30 straight nightsafter that. I think it’s a huge testament to the pacing of the music and drummer Tyson Vogel that Two Gallants’ albums and shows don’t meander into the doldrums of self-deprecating sludge. Instead the music remains focused and oddly energetic even during the slow stuff.

Slang Chickens – El Cid

The opener, Slang Chickens, are one of my favorite LA bands and it was nice seeing the guys play after 9 months without any LA club shows. Lead chicken Evan Weiss had been sealed in studio the past year when he wasn’t playing with the recently defunct band Girls. There were a couple newer songs but it seems we’ll have to wait a bit longer to hear all the new stuff which I’m hoping will be released sooner than later. The Chickens also provided a Kevin Bacon type moment as the youngest member of the punk poultry crew, Darren Weiss is also the lead singer/drummer of PAPA; the band that will be supporting Two Gallants during their upcoming tour.
