Ed. Note: In this episode of ‘Charles Goes to a Show to Cover a Band He SHOULD Know but Doesn’t,’ we find our titular protagonist out and about on a frigid-as-all-fuck school night somewhere in Brooklyn, NY (“just down the block from Luger’s,” he offered) settling down among the swollen, bespectacled and surprisingly affable crowd to soak in the sights and sounds of what may be the hottest ticket in town: Two Gallants. Tonight is the first of the band’s long sold-out, three-day NYC residency and they’re accompanied on their tenure by Providence’s own bubblegum cum max rock chums, Happiness (featuring 3/5s of Deer Tick for whatever that’s worth). He is grumpy, at first, as he often is. Bitter and brow-beaten by a day’s labor he has no business in. But from the first lick of guitar screaming under the hot lights, he is awakened. He loves it. He wants Happiness and him to be the bestest of friends. When Two Gallants emerge, he is titillated by the thunder derived from their curious placement of mics but is, then, wholly taken with their embrace of the Appalachian atmosphere ranging from dirt blues to rust jig, from pummeling fury to back-paging woe and back and forth and back and forth again ’til GAWD! only knows and there are so many around him banging their heads, weeping freely, shouting and smiling and got free that he can’t help but feel a fool for not having gone in for these Bay Area nooners years sooner. “Oh well,” he thinks. “At least I’ve got now.” You sure do, pal. Now please dig, if you will, his pictures.
