Tin Ear Tuesday – 13 Days to Halloween (the creep) Tin Ear Tuesday – 13 Days to Halloween (the creep)

Oh, how I love Halloween. The costumes. The candy. The creep (not the razorblade Snickers so much as the doomed come back to traumatize the living with blood and spite and the dead dread of night). That being said my first trip towards this most venerated of goth holidays (some lives you can’t escape) is less mix and more experience. Yes, there are songs here (consider Jandek) but there are also Number Station Irdials and several EVPs. It’s a bad time, really. An unpleasant fucking thing I’ve revisited and revised far too much already before I even considered throwing it at you, my dear ghoul-loving friends. I’d like to note that this is the thirteenth Tin Ear Tuesday containing thirteen tracks coming thirteen days before Halloween so please don’t be surprised if bad things happen in the course of your listening. Also, for this particular Tin Ear I’ve elected to use photos taken several years ago at the (long abandoned) Seaview Farm Colony in place of artists because that place is fucking terrifying and, once, the home of Cropsey. Pleasant dreams. Rock it.

The Conet Project – “The Swedish Rhapsody Irdial” from The Conet Project…Many moons ago I asked for (and received) a Shortwave Radio for Christmas and used it to spend many tortured insomniacal nights sifting through static in the hopes of discovering an active number station. Where to begin? Number stations transmit weird tones, songs, words and (duh) numbers as code. They’re also known as spy stations. Their origins and destinations are entirely unknown. The Conet Project existed (exists?) to document these anomalous broadcasts. The Swedish Rhapsody is renowned as being the eeriest.

Einstürzende Neubauten – “Seele Brunnt” from Strategies Against Architecture II…This band is real. They have been for thirty some odd years. What they do is unprecedented, unheralded and unimaginable. German miscreants with amazing hair who invent their sound and instruments around death, destruction, Germany, the I Ching and Blixa Bargeld…so…hope? There are two moments in my life when my mother asked what I was listening to. The first time I played her Ministry. The second time, this. We don’t talk about music much anymore. Guess I win?

Mount Vernon Arts Lab – “The Mandrake Club” from The Seance at Hobs Lane…I really can’t remember how I stumbled on this record or what it meant so here’s a long winded quote from “band leader” Drew Hulholland regarding this record from the Fortean Times…”A lot of the material on this album came directly from the research I was doing. Finding out more about such diverse subjects as Victor Grayson’s disappearance in the ‘20s, or the fact that Thomas DeQuincy lived in Glasgow for a short while, or abandoned underground stations. There was a real current of what some might call occult energy with this record. Two examples from Séance…would be The Vauxhall Labyrinth, which reminded me of Sherlock Holmes and Fu Manchu, and While London Sleeps, which was an article about the postal railway that runs between Paddington and Whitechapel. This subterranean railway carries no passengers and is for the transportation of passengers and mail only. To me something like that is so romantic and evocative. Services began on 5 December 1927 fact fans.”

Peter James – EVP from Full Circle Cafe…AAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGH! A GHOST!

NDE – IV from Krieg Blut Ehre Asche …I really don’t know much about this band other than the fact that they’re cryptic so it’s black metal and bad, bad, BAD martial industrial. Might not be nazi. Might just be evil. Hoping for the latter. The title translate roughly into “Bloody War, Honorable Ash” so…yeah. I don’t know. I told you this mix was a bad idea.

Throbbing Gristle – “Hamburger Lady” from D.O.A. – The Third and Final Report of T.G.…This song is about a wretched burn victim trying to pick up a cup with her mangled hands or trying to remain alive or FUCK, MAN! Life is cruel. Life is horrible. The world is ever unkind. Genesis is a genius. I apologize.

The Ghost Orchid – “Only Sonja Will Make It” from An Introduction to EVP…Raymond Cass, more or less, introduced the world to Electronic Voice Phenomenon. This record is a collection of some of his more peculiar experiences with the paranormal. Some ghost speaks. Some ghosts slur. Some ghosts sing. This one’s the last and it’s fucking eerie and totally addictive. Who the fuck is Sonja? What did she survive? HOW CAN I STOP THE MELODY?!?!?!

Wooden Veil – “Gravity Problems” from Wooden Veil…This is not the most unsettling track off this release by far. Still, it fucks me up. Wooden Veil are a German performance art troupe (read: AUGH!) and sometime, several years ago decided it would be a good idea to combine the isolationism of Jandek with the costumes of Forcefield and the Japanahorrordeaddeaddeadgodpleasestopme aesthetics of…um…Death in June? Kinda sounds like the Residents, actually but not clever so much as possessed.

Jandek – “Show Me the Way, O Lord” from Ready for the House…Oh, man. Yeah. I put a Jandek song on this. Shit. For those of you who don’t know Jandek, you should probably know that you were far better of in your ignorance. He is a strange man from a dark place who has been making music long before the era of art brut cashing overkill. A few years ago he emerged to exist. I sincerely don’t know if that helped or hurt but – Jesus – his tones are damaged.

Central New York Ghost Hunters – EVP from [redacted] Hotel…Honestly, no good can come from listening to this track. There’s all sorts of pieces written about it and I can’t safely verify whether they’re true or false or what the fuck all but I can tell you that this is nearly eleven minutes of madness and violence and…more madness and violence…and horror…and a ticking clock. Fuck. You might want to skip this one. Still…

Ancestors – “II” from II EP…Well, if you made it through Jandek and that fucking EVP you get rewarded by Mark McCoy playing white belt black metal screeching. I think I actually own this vinyl. I’m a dipshit. It works for the continued awfulness of this mix but I’d really hope that you never revisit it.

Unwound – “Fingernails on a Chalkboard” from Repetition…I used to think this track was dark and brooding but, at this point, I feel it’s a welcome fucking relief. Goddamn, man. How the fuck did I put this thing together? How did anyone ever decide it was okay to make out with me? Are you still here? Have you endured the necromancy? Honestly, you should just play this mix in the background at your office or your next social gathering and see what happens. I DO look forward to your comments.

Sarah Estep – Miscellaneous EVPs…HI GHOSTS! HI, NICE GHOSTS! HOW ARE YOU?!? PLEASE DON’T HAUNT ME! PLEASE DON’T HAUNT ME! PLEASE DON’T HAUNT ME! PLEASE DON’T HAUNT ME! PLEASE DON’T HAUNT ME! PLEASE DON’T HAUNT ME! PLEASE DON’T HAUNT ME! PLEASE DON’T HAUNT ME! PLEASE DON’T HAUNT ME! PLEASE DON’T HAUNT ME! PLEASE DON’T HAUNT ME! PLEASE DON’T HAUNT ME! PLEASE DON’T HAUNT ME! PLEASE DON’T HAUNT ME! PLEASE DON’T HAUNT ME! PLEASE DON’T HAUNT ME! PLEASE DON’T HAUNT ME! PLEASE DON’T HAUNT ME! PLEASE DON’T HAUNT ME! PLEASE DON’T HAUNT ME! PLEASE DON’T HAUNT ME!
