The Roots - How I Got Over

It’s simply impossible for The Roots to make a bad album. The worst that the crew from Philly can do is record an album less-good than their others. And even their less-good shit is twice as good as almost everything out there.

Scientifically speaking:
(The Roots-Album X ≥ The Roots-Album Y) > Everything Else…Its simple mathematics.

What I can’t explain is how an album starts out as “less-good” than some of their other shit, minimally increases in quality and enjoyability with every listen; then at a seemingly random moment, explodes into the pantheon of great Roots albums. My ex-girlfriend was a closet math genius and could probably show how that worked, im guessing there some percentage signs – possibly a bar graph or some shit, I don’t know, thats a level of math I never reached. Mr. Gladwell might say the album “tipped” from good to great; perhaps a certain level of familiarity (or something) that pushes something from the realm of “like” into “love”. However one chooses to explain this phenomenon, sometimes it just takes a little time to fall in love.

So yes, it wasn’t love at first sight. But it wasn’t hate at first sight, or even indifference at first sight either. Like I said, it’s impossible for The Roots to make a bad album. How I Got Over was good, not great. It was all there, the drums hit hard, Black Thought’s passion emanated, the featured artists made me double check my iTunes and the melodies were uniquely The Roots. I just couldn’t help but think and feel this wasn’t the best of The Roots. Better than most of course, better than maybe a few of the albums in The Roots catalog even. Just not love at first sight.

Now I can’t wait to listen to this album. I can’t wait for the next track, I can’t wait to hear that snare. This is good hip hop and lets never take The Roots for granted.
