The Bird and the Bee Ray - Guns Are Not Just the Future

Here The Bird and the Bee serve up something out of Alice and Wonderland mixed with memories of your mom singing you to sleep; repetitive, soothing, and charming. Ray Guns, the follow up to The Bird and the Bee’s first self titled album, is about what you would expect from the indie pop, whimsical duo from LA. Inara George, our bee, keeps pace with a catchy lyrical style and beats about love, lust, and going to bed. But unlike the first LP, Ray Guns is missing the cleverness and soul that got us hooked in the first place.

It’s almost difficult to discern the meaning behind Georges words because on the surface, it’s just poppy, mesmerizing noise. The album lacks any uniformity or cohesiveness, but makes up for it with its ability to get stuck in your head. They almost get you with decent storytelling and rhythm. But then the chorus kicks in, and again, and again… and you ask yourself, why am I listening to this? Clearly they’re on the verge of something great. Maybe next album they’ll get it right.
