Future Islands - On The Water

Head on over to NPR to get a first listen of Future Islands’ new album, ‘On The Water’ due out October 11. Admittedly I’ve never spent any significant amount of time in Baltimore, but it’s a blue-collar city that’s known for providing a working-class juxtaposition to its neighbor the white-collar mecca that is Washington D.C.

I won’t undercut that in depth review of this album that were about to publish by injecting my opinions here, but I truly believe that this is an album with a very clear mission, and one that’s emphatically accomplished during this full-length. Lead singer Sam Herring pulls no punches in his efforts to tug on the heartstrings of his listeners early and often. I personally find the majority of albums written with this goal to come off as emotionally manipulative and self-aggrandizing; not here, not Future Islands. With a watchmaker’s precision Future Islands seems to navigate an almost endless amount of land mines in the process of delivering a most gentle album for our collective listening experience.
