Readers of Pinpoint Music we try not to get political too often. But please visit this link and urge your congressperson to reject the “Protect IP Act (PIPA)” due to receive a floor vote by Senate. In short it’s introduced by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) and would make it so they could ban any website/server/IP that they claimed to be infringing upon their copyright. Keep in mind no court case would be had to see if the site was actually infringing, leaving the RIAA to determine which websites you were allowed to look at.

This issue goes far beyond music. This bill represents the potential for one of the biggest violations of our freedom in the Internet age . It’s receiving absolutely no press today, due in large part to the fact that the media stands to benefit from added control over what websites you can and cannot view.

This is the definition of a slippery slope. When cannot allow private corporations with very defined interests to determine which websites we can and cannot view. If this gets passed it’s just a matter of time before every private corporation gets their hands into this cookie jar and soon our Internet will resemble that of China where the government gets to determine what information is disseminated. Please fight to reject The Protect IP act.
