Coming off the success of their 2011 release, Days, Real Estate performed for what was their largest Los Angeles crowd to date last Friday at the Fonda Theatre in Hollywood. Not only was the audience big, they were enthusiastic. Loyal fans sang, hummed and jammed along to the New Jersey indie-pop, surf-rock band’s 17-song set, with grins and focused emotion throughout.

I’ve seen the band three times now. The last time was in the summer of 2011 in Atlanta, Georgia at a small venue called The Earl. This was two months before Days was released, and I’m telling you, there were about 40 people in the room for them that night. That’s it. August 3rd’s show in LA nearly sold out the 1300-capacity room on Hollywood Blvd.

Critical acclaim has been good to the indie rockers. But more so, I think they’re jangling guitars and laid-back, foot-tapping rhythms have not only matured, but also caught on with listeners. It was evident in the Fonda. As for the Southern California crowd – 20-something females to 40-something rockers were all swaying along to the grooves in unison.

As a preamble to Real Estate, Austin, TX native Cameron Stallones A.K.A. Sun Araw and his band mate created psychedelic echoing tones and loops switching back and forth between guitars and synths which most certainly set a mood as people settled in. The set appeared to be about half planned and half improvised – adding up to a full experience in experimental psych-rock.
