Pharoahe Monch - W.A.R.

Everything in moderation your mom said.

Candy, Mountain Dew, Television, even vegetables; crazy fucking concept. You finally appreciated how right your mom was that first time you got way too drunk at the party and spent the wee hours of the night hugging the toilet bowl in the guest bathroom at your buddy’s house. Despite the sausage fest, the shitty beer and the cheap rum, you learned.

Although you have occasional lapses in judgment, years later you’re still able to apply mom’s lesson; too much Mexican food will ruin your ass and maybe a few pairs of underwear(too easy, I know), too much sunshine will make you miserable in your own skin (and skin cancer I guess, oops!), and too much spicy hot mustard will, well, it’ll ruin your sandwich. Like everything that’s good in small doses, Pharoahe Monch is that spicy hot mustard.

Unfortunately, W.A.R. (We Are Renegades) is too much Pharoahe Monch; of a dude with an indistinguishable voice with very uninspiring beats and a whatever message. The problem is, I REALLY like spicy hot mustard, I’ve never REALLY liked Pharoahe Monch. I mean, he’s been ok as a featured artist on other tracks, and it feels like he gets hyped by artists I really like, but, I’ve gushed about spicy hot mustard, like, literally verbalized how much I fucking love the mustard on a sandwich or other mustard-appropriate foodstuffs. I’ve never felt anything remotely close to that with Pharoahe Monch.

W.A.R. isn’t terrible, it’s just there. There isn’t a single track I’d recommend to a friend, there isn’t a rhyme that will make you want to hear it again, and the beats sound like what it would be like if there was a “hip hop” button on your Casio. Despite the Stringer Bell intro, and my growing crush on Jean Grae, W.A.R. has too much spicy hot mustard.

Not following the mustard line of thought there.

I’m unfortunately one of those fools now – I REALLY dig this. He’s going for epic – maybe a bit grandiose a goal but concept is good.
