Maps & Atlases - Perch Patchwork

Congratulations, Maps & Atlases…you’ve finally made a record for girlfriends.

And fuck it, right? I mean, look at Rick Springfield. One fucking song and Jessie’s been sleeping alone since 1981.

Not that I really think you’re trying to steal our loves away but you have to admit there’s a little bit of “let’s see how many girls who like dudes who like dudes who play music for dudes who like music like our dude music we can get if we just play plainer and, occasionally a drum line” at work here.

No?

You’re lying.

I mean, that’s cool. You guys are really good at what you do. It borders treacherously close to the great insipid hippie but never quite crosses over to inspire the reactionary dementia that breeds Greta Van Susetren erotic fan fiction.

Kudos.

I still think your EPS were better, though. Not that this is bad. It’s just safe. Soft. Logical. Delightful in all the right places. A little bit challenging, but nothing at all like you’ve offered us before.

Perch Patchwork is a loving marriage of pick-up nerves and lush fascinations. Arcade Fire without the Lake Woebegone as pillbox horror doldrum. Vampire Weekend, had they choose Grandma’s knitting lessons over the white devil’s needlework.

It should be a fucking gargantuan record for you.  It should make you sleepy darlings if not out and out superstars.

And I really hope it does.

I just think you were better excitable.
