Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Fucking Kanye. America loves on you so hard. It’s so fucking obvious and pathetic.

Oh, there are those who say they hate you sooo much for what you did to that poor, poor, ridiculously famous, stupidly rich and hateably cute blonde girl. There are those who quote stupid South Park episodes to be funny and seem clever around their friends; and there are those who just think you’re an arrogant fuck. But they love to hate you. And in the same way that it’s cool to like mustaches, fannie packs or whatever other weird shit that people like because it goes against the widely-accepted-as-“cool” grain; people love Kanye West. (P.S. that’s you Pitchfork, 10.0 my ass).

The only problem is we don’t feel quite as strongly about his music. We don’t really hold him accountable for his shit; we just resolve to absolutely love him or absolutely hate him. So we call My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy either the album of the year or we just ignore it.

So guess what, Kanye West made another really good album. It’s not the album of the year, but it’s tight, it’s focused, it ebbs and flows the way a complete album should, it’s got songs I wanna hear when I’m out on a Friday night, it even goes as far as to resolve questions fans may have had surrounding the G.O.O.D. Friday new music releases (umm, why are these songs not that G.O.O.D.?) Kanye had been giving us this summer/fall – which, for cynics (me), is impressive on its own.

Kanye sure does talk about himself a whole lot though. I know, stop the presses right? Pretty stupid criticism of a hip hop artist. It’s like saying chefs talk about food too much or I guess anyone who talks about their job too much; it’s just a natural byproduct of the profession. But it’s fucking annoying right? It just seems so much more noticeable on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Kanye is at moderately-attractive-girl-in-law-school-levels on this one, and I had just kinda hoped that by this stage in the game, and with the level of success he’s achieved, he’d be exploring his lyrical content a little more.

Make no mistake, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is Kanye West’s best album, and no minor criticism can negate how good it really is. It’s not the best album ever in the history of all music ever, but damn, I crave this album every day.
