Governors Ball 2014 – Gotham Tent Preview Governors Ball 2014 – Gotham Tent Preview

gov-ball-nycSo we’re coming fast on one of the only NYC festivals worth giving a subway rat’s chance of a damn about and since we’ll be in attendance again (thanks, Gov!) we figured it’d only be sporting to take a minute and start considering the many, many, MANY acts (on a stage by stage, day by day, set by set basis) that would be playing next weekend. Today, we tackle The Gotham Tent. Sounds ominous, don’t it? It is and mostly isn’t. Rockit.

FRIDAY, 6.6!

12:15-12:40 – The Chain Gang of 1974 – I’m always going to think this is Ian Svenonious and then be disappointed that I never saw the Nation of Ulysses light their shoes on fire. It’s not. It’s synthpop from a love dude.

12:45-1:30 – Little Daylight – More synth. Bigger beats. Vague nouveau Brooklyn tribalism. Lady singing. Guilt free make out session.

2:15-3:00 – Ratking – The new mad bastids of the New York scene. Youngbloods. Tagged toughs. Hip hop with a new breed of beat experimental reverence with some live motherfucking MCs.

3:45-4:45 – Washed Out – Electric dreams from a gentle man. Sing me to the shore.

5:45-6:45 – La Roux – I’m sorry, man. But if you want to keep your synthesizer true, you have to look to Europe and the return of the chanteuse that is UK’s La Roux.

8:15-9:15 – Grimes – Am I going to see Grimes before Lemon? The world is a dick.

SATURDAY, 6.7!

12:45-1:30 – The Internet – I forgot Odd Future had a girl and I certainly had no idea she had so much soul pouring through her little bones. Damn, girl. SWOON!

2:15-3:00 – Deafheaven – Listen, I have as much of a soft spot for the desperate meditation of black metal as the next shoeless tweep but I don’t really understand what was so transcendent about Sunbather. I mean it was good and all but you people are nuts.

3:45-4:45 – Chance the Rapper – Finally, the B-Boys are taking acid.

5:45-6:45 – The Glitch Mob – Bleak beat makers from the City of Angels. Five bucks says their set is deafening.

8:15-9:30 – Sleigh Bells – I’m secretly super psyched to see Sleigh Bells because papa loves a good jock jam and they sport more amps than a SUNN O))) expansion.

SUNDAY, 6.8!

12:15-12:40 – Ben Cameron – Sunday morning, come down easy.

12:50-1:30 – Cayucas – Total sunshine rumble pop. Giddy and easy and, also, with twins.

2:15-3:00 – Banks – Dark soul shot from a vintage theater geek. I’m speculating. Why do pretty girls always get the best damage?

3:45-4:45 – AlunaGeorge – UK dance pop duo designed for cocktails with high rent charm boys.

5:45-6:45 – The Bloody Beetroots (live) – Italian crash dance rip rock in venom masks with (in this instance) actual instrumentation. Pretty sure they had a big falling out with Justin Pearson.

8:15-9:15 – Empire of the Sun – Moderation is a fatal thing, friends. Your life deserves more excess.
