I give a lot of credit Greg Gillis better known as Girl Talk. I give, perhaps too much, credit for something as simple as dance music. Girl Talk has been known for his extensive collages of popular music. His live shows have been hallmarked by the popular image of the artist surrounded by droves of sweaty patrons crowding his saran wrapped laptop. Outside of the dance floor are his steady stream of albums which are always fun but whether intended or not they are becoming more than dance music. All Day is a statement on popular culture, context and reappropriation as well as a mindless dance record. It is as shallow or deep as you want it to be. A thesis or a one night stand. You can be thoughtful while clenching a bag of cocaine and spinning your shirt like a helicopter above your head.

Continuing the tradition started in 2004’s Unstoppable, Gillis uses multiple layers for his songs, usually with hip hop occupying the primary layer and indie, dance, metal, electronic and pop as the background layers. On a rudimentary level, All Day works as a game of recognition as well as a chance for discovery. Some of the more engaging parts of the album were centered around two or three recognizable songs being presented in different contexts. When it is good, it shines. When it is average, it is still pretty good. Some of the shinning moments feel obvious ( Bad Romance vs. Windowlicker, Can I Get A Vs Tenderness) while some of them take the listener by complete surprise (Twerp Vs. Mr. Blue Sky, Haterz Everywhere Vs Layla). You cant help but smile because deep down, you fucking love it.

The cut up technique was popularized by writer William Burroughs but extends back into the anarchist days of Dadaism. By taking pieces of texts from different sources and rearranging them, the context has been transformed and casts the source material in strange lighting. Things that were once serious can now be silly while things silly are now serious. Gillis plays with roles by sometimes casting the most absurd songs as the dramatic role and highlight of the song. Twista’s “Wetter” has, while originally ridiculous with lines like:

“Let me enter your atmosphere As you enter my world And lemme touch that booty”

has now become serious and monumentally epic when put to the backdrop of U2’s “With Or Without You.” This transitive nature of popular music is indicative of a culture in constant motion as well as a consumer with blurred lines of taste. Our society has progressed to the point that sampling, cutting up or mashing up is considered an art as much as a technique. Negativeland, DJ Shadow and Danger Mouse have all released albums to much merit and acclaim.

All Day, it is offered to the public for free and licensed under the all popular creative commons. This continues Girl Talk’s tradition of leaking and spreading music at little to no cost. Perhaps this marketing structure is done out of fear of legal appraisal from the near 400 artists which appear on this record. Perhaps this also promotes his extensive tour which circles the US in the Spring. Still, I truly believe releasing music for free allows the consumer to reevaluate the monetary value on music. Everything on this record has been heard seen and done before. It is only now that we can see the same thing for the first time. Gillis is less of a mashup DJ and more like the Marcel Duchamp of the club floor. Then again, perhaps I give him too much credit. Whatever the case, All Day is a giant party where anything is popular, nothing is sacred and everyone’s invited.
