FYF 2013 Artist Spotlight: Deerhunter FYF 2013 Artist Spotlight: Deerhunter

deerhunterImagine you have three ingredients before you:  Promethazine with Codeine cough syrup, Sprite, and a green apple flavored Jolly Rancher hard candy.  Now imagine you mix said ingredients, consume two small cups of your tranquilizing sizzurp concoction, and then blast the album Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols on a continuous loop, while you melt into the couch, like butter on hot toast.  A moment, we can only assume, Sid Vicious would approve of.  If you can visualize that, then you may have a grasp of what’s in store from the band Deerhunter.  (Images of Christopher Walken playing Russian roulette dancing through your head cannot be avoided.  Just go with it.)

The Atlanta, Georgia based Deerhunter is back with their unique brand of self-described “ambient punk”, and touring behind the release of their sixth studio album, Monomania, which was released May of this year.  Prone to various line-up changes since the release of their debut album in 2005, unofficially titled Turn It Up Faggot, the current incarnation includes the core trio of the band: co-founders Bradford Cox and Moses Archuleta, along with longtime band member, Lockett Pundt.  Joining the crew is bassist Josh Mckay, and guitarist Frankie Broyles.

Their latest project, Monomania, was recorded at Rare Book Studio, in Brooklyn, New York (the same studio in which they recorded their 2008 album, Microcastle), and clearly shows an attempt to re-connect with the bands pugnacious punk roots, while still maintaining the sedated nocturnal garage rock ambiance the band is known for.   Live performances have the potential to be “much more savage” than their albums tend to be.  Bradford Cox has been known to don a sundress, and smear fake blood on his hands, and face, saying, “I don’t like the idea of going around stage in just jeans and a t-shirt. It seems anticlimactic.”  Don’t miss them climax at the FYF fest in L.A. this Saturday, August 24th, on the Carrie Stage at 7:55pm.
