Cunninlynguists - Strange Journey Volume One

Bands like Vampire Weekend really bother me because their name sounds pretty badass, but their music is actually kinda flowery and hollow. I actually picture pixies playing harps, bouncing on daisies when I listen to Vampire Weekend. Pretty much the exact opposite of badass; or maybe that’s what vampires do on the weekend, who fucking knows.
I get a similar, less defined, feeling from Cunninlynguists. The name is a play on words because it sounds like something else you do with your mouth. I get it. The problem is, the name is kinda lame and actually gives more definition to the group more than the music does.

As an independent hip hop group from the south, devoid of some of the attributes we’ve come to associate with southern rap, they’re highly likeable. They’ve captured southern rap’s unique musical elements within the spirit and sound of independent hip hop; leaving out the grillz, diamond studded goblets and overall ridiculousness in exchange for pictures painted of life and struggles in the south as artists who don’t really make that much money. I can actually picture myself somewhere in the humid-as-fuck south, in a ‘beater, drinking cheap beer listening to this and sayin’ “sheeeit”.

So it’s unfortunate for Cunninlynguists that they made a solid album, beginning to end, with no real club bangers. And it’s unfortunate all their members and featured artists kinda sound the same; because their name becomes takes center stage, and it makes me think of weird stuff – like what it would look like if Gift of Gab performed oral sex on a woman while simultaneously performing “Alphabet Aerobics”, and what the music video would look like. Would it be shot Kardashian sex tape style? Or maybe in Paris Hilton, night vision BJ style. Or would it be a weird artistic rendition by Spike Jonze?
